Elie Saab burns bright

Evening dresses illuminated with crystal and pearls

9 Июля 2014

How many chandeliers does it take to light an Elie Saab show? Nine!

How so? Because there was hardly a dress on parade that did not have crystals to illuminate, pearls to which to give a glow, and Swarowski prisms to shine like jet.

The designer called his set, with its cluster of crystal chandeliers, a ‘Palace of Light’, fitting for the city of Paris with a similar title.

There was no pretence of creating day clothes – unless you imagine a cute, ribbon-tied fur stole in powder blue to sling round a pair of jeans.

Denim! That is not the stuff of Saab couture, where even short, bouncy dresses are for the cocktail hour and after. A couple of almost transparent gowns suggested a risqué midnight hour.

The designer may not have a unique fashion message, but he must be right on target, since the audience of clients is so large that the gracious ladies have to be given a separate entrance door. And there was a change in spirit, as long-sleeved dresses, although still very light, were full of grace.

So, even though Saab’s menu is limited, it is tailored for these clients – right up to the gorgeous wedding gown with its lace train of ecclesiastical beauty.
