“That’s so easy!” said Tom Ford when I asked him why he had chosen Hollywood over London Fashion Week for his February women’s show
“The London shows are the same weekend as the Oscars — how much heat are you going to get? It’s a problem for all British designers, he continued, after showing his men’s collection under softbox movie studio lights at his London headquarters.
Since he re-booted his career from award winning film director back to fashion, Tom has shown in London. And so it was this season as male threesomes walked out in checked, tailored coats and shearling and leather bombers, as part of London Collections: Men.
“And always as narrow as possible,” said Tom, referring especially to made-in-America jeans.
The designer described this Autumn 2015 collection as “early Sixties by way of early Eighties”. And there was a sense of Swinging London rather than hip LA in the body-fitting suits and some jazzy op-art patterns. So is the Hollywood adventure a one-off show — or a permanent new deal? “Hollywood is my second home — all my family are in LA and it costs 30 percent less than showing here,” he said. “But I am not ready to give up London yet.”
