Bringing Worlds Together
16 Февраля 2015
Ever since Edun showed at the Skylight Studio at Moynihan Station back in 2013, where sets can create a world, the brand with a soul has looked streamlined and sassy. But it was the arrival of creative director Danielle Sherman two years ago that has put a halo around this house.
It is unfortunately all too easy for brands that try to help the developing world to be landed with a reputation for being worthy, not to say, dull. But this designer has created a graphic and streamlined silhouette, which speaks of modernity, while still following the Edun ethos of sourcing, where possible, materials touched by both human hands and Africa’s rich history.
For the Autumn 2015 season, a construction of old stones gave both an ancient and modern feel to the backdrop; while the sleek clothes had a touch of the imperfect, as when a coat hemline was deliberately left fraying and undone.
Handcraft, well done, can be a powerful tool, whether as a woven tapestry coat or metallic strips on leather. Sherman seems to have that exceptional skill of sourcing pieces from afar, but making them relevant to fashion here, now.
